What are hotspots and coldspots?

What are hotspots and coldspots?

Hot-spots:

Excessively heated sections of straightener plates or curling rods which can potentially harm hair due to very high temperatures.

Cold-spots:

Parts of the straightener plates or curling rods which do not heat up to the indicated temperature and are hence colder as compared to the the properly heated sections.

Causes of hot-spots and cold-spots:

  • Poor quality ceramic coating No ceramic coating

  • Name-sake ceramic coating Poor quality heating elements

  • Lesser number of heating elements as compared to the plate size or length in case of straighteners

  • Lesser number of heating elements as compared to the rod thickness and length in case of curlers

Why are hot-spots and cold-spots dangerous for your hair?

  • They are a heat styling nightmare and waste a lot of time and energy in styling.

  • Hair that come in contact with the hot-spots get damaged.

  • Hair that come in contact with warm-spot get styled.

  • Hair that come in contact with the cold spots do not get styled and hence you have to keep styling again and again thus exposing the earlier styled hair to unrequited, repeated, excessive heat further damaging them.

  • It can get very very tricky during chemical treatments as you are not using the optimum heat required and hence the efficacy of the treatment is hampered, which means you have an unhappy client.

Why are hot-spots and cold-spots dangerous for your tools& your safety?

  • Hot-spots can permanently damage parts of the plate or rod thus reducing the life of your styling tool.

  • Heat over-runs can reduce the life of the heating elements and also can cause electrical hazards and accidents

Overall it's like driving a car whose speed you have no control on at all, and, you are still in the driver's seat.

What can you do about it?

  • Buy good quality products which promise real ceramic, Tourmaline-ceramic or Titanium coating and not just any labels claiming to be.

  • Research honest brands which openly talk about the technical features in their products and not just brands which have endorsements from celebrities.

  • Ask blunt and open questions about claims on plate and rod coatings and heating technologies.

You are making an investment in a hair styling tool and you have every right to ask questions. It better be an informed decision and the investment better be worth it.
